My career in Liaison Psychiatry, working at the interface between physical and mental health, has lead to my interest in working in an integrated manner with professional colleagues to ensure that all aspects of illness, both related to the mind and body, are addressed. This principle is fundamental to the practice of Whole Person Care and to Integra Psychiatry. I completed my medical degree from Newcastle University in 2000 and began training in Psychiatry in 2002 in the North East, gaining experience in number of psychiatric specialities including General Adult, Old Age, Forensic and Learning Disabilities. I moved to London after gaining my Membership to the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2006 where I worked in both Rehabilitation and Addictions Psychiatry. I also undertook an academic post as a Clinical Teaching Fellow at St George’s, University of London from 2009-2010, where I achieved a Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare and Biomedical Education. I began Higher Specialist Training at the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust in 2010 where I further specialised in Liaison Psychiatry. I also had the opportunity to work at both the National Psychosis and Mother and Baby Units, furthering my interest in maternal mental health. I have worked as an NHS Consultant in Liaison Psychiatry since 2013, leading a diverse, multidisciplinary team in Sunderland Royal Hospital, a service which has won local and national recognition. I have special interests in the management of self-harm, chronic pain, persistent physical symptoms (including functional neurological disorders) and perinatal (maternal) mental disorders, but am also expert in the assessment and treatment of a wide range of mental disorders including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, eating disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), complex trauma and personality disorders. I am active in medical leadership and until recently was working as an Associate Medical Director at a local mental health Trust. Through this, I have led on a number of innovative service developments which have enhanced the care of the population I serve.
